The sheer physical beauty of the Zihuatanejo Bay, the pristine beaches and its isolated location have made it a favourite destination for centuries. Located north of Acapulco, pirates used the bay as a base to repair and restock their ships while waiting for the Spanish gold shipments from Manila. In the movie Shawshank Redemption it was Zihuatanejo where the two main characters met after their times in jail. The town’s current visitors are somewhat less notorious — mostly Nord Americanos escaping our cold winters.

With Ixtapa just a short drive away, the dual destination offers a wide range of accommodation. Those looking for all-inclusive resorts will choose Ixtapa. Those looking for small character hotels with more local contact will choose Zihua. My friend’s parents took her to the Hotel Irma when she was a girl and she continues the tradition with her children — a recommendation good enough for me.

The Irma was one of the original hotels and, over the years, has been enlarged and updated yet maintains its charm. Yes, there’s an infinity pool, but there are also live plants in the bathroom. An entertaining bonus to your stay is watching Oscar, the gardener, tend his cliffside flora. He’s part mountain goat.

El Centro is about a 15-minute walk via the seawall or shady side street. I’d do the side streets into town, stopping at the laundry and bakery along the way, then do the seawall on the way back to the hotel.

Few of the hotels in that part of Zihua could be called “wheelchair friendly” because of the terrain. However, the sunset views are unforgettable.

Beaches
Playa la Ropa and Playa Las Gatos get top marks.

What to do
Besides the usual tanning and swimming, there’s sport fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, bird watching and let’s not forget the 18-hole golf course at Ixtapa. I also discovered two Mexican cooking schools. Plus lots of shopping if you’re so inclined.

Shopping

Let’s start with the Artisans Tourist Market on a street named Cinco de Mayo. Bring your bartering skills for everything from tacky trinkets to treasures. Zihuatanejo’s Municipal Market, on Benito Juarez is quite dark and crowded, but if you go ‘round to the side streets, there are plenty of street stalls selling dried chilies, fresh fruit and vegetables. Paseo del Pescador is the strip of stores, cafes and vendors stalls near the municipal dock. My favourite shop was La Zapoteca which featured beautiful woven products from Oaxaca.

Eating

Zihua has many small cafes and restaurants. My two favourites were Los Brassaros, a three-generation family operation and Rufo’s, a patio place where everything was cooked on a 45-gallon oil drum barbecue.

Dos Momentos Especiales (Two special moments)
Uno

The first Sunday on holidays, I struck up a conversation with a Mexican family staying at my hotel. That night I was reading a book about 11 p.m. There was a tap, tap, tap at my patio door and it was them.

“We’re going to town to get something to eat. Come with us,” they said. I could hardly remember all their names. I’d only met them that same day. It’s dark. I’m not hungry…. “Just give me a minute to get dressed,” I said.

Sunday night is a combination family reunion-barbecue-music concert-dating club. The sidewalks overflowed with people. Children with glowing light sticks ran in the dark. Huge stereo speakers the size of small refrigerators pounded out music. There were portable taco stands with hissing propane stoves. And tired smiling parents half watching the teenagers who were pairing off and heading to dark corners.

My new-found friends showed me their favourite restaurant which, of course, became one of mine.

When we left El Centro about 1:30 a.m., the traffic was almost gridlock.

You know the credit card advertisement that gives the price of the item, then says the experience was priceless. The trip downtown that night cost nothing and I can tell you the experience was priceless. I am so glad I did it.

Dos

This was my first time in Mexico when a trip overlapped Valentine’s Day. I was quite bemused by the number of small 10-foot by 10-foot stores, with the typical roll-down doors, selling nothing but Valentine’s gifts. Helium balloons, plastic hearts, candy, teddy bears all with ribbons and sashes which had wording swearing undying love for the recipient. I was having a late lunch in town on the 14th and the parade of uniformed schoolgirls carrying their gifts from admirers was something to see. Especially the girls struggling to carry teddy bears larger than themselves while their boyfriend walked empty-handed beside them. It was obvious Valentine’s Day is taken seriously, so I bought some candy to take back to the hotel. While her workmates and supervisor watched, I teased my maid about how her husband should have a drink and dinner ready for her when she got home. She laughed and shook her head no. I handed her the candy and we all laughed.

Dollar store pencils help break the ice

Before each visit to Mexico, I stop at my local dollar store for a couple of packages of pencils. You know, the red and white ones with our flag and Canada printed on them.

I keep them in an easy to reach spot in my day pack and use the phrase “Pork los ninos” (for the children). I give them to Mexican mothers with children who are crying.

Like a miracle, they stop crying. When I need help with my directions, I look for someone with children. I take out a pencil (one pencil per child), use my little Spanish phrase and everyone is smiling. I like to think of it as my little bit of international diplomacy.

Zihuatanejo is a beautiful spot. I wish I’d gone sooner. Go!
